Making your own Lego models is actually not that hard. You don't need to model everything from scratch. This mini tutorial shortly descibes how these 2 images where made:

First of all you need LeoCad or LDraw. I prefer LeoCad but I assume these work in a very similar way. Use one of these programs to assemble your Lego models. When you download one of these applications don't forget also to download the lates brick library.

Now you can build your own Lego models or find Lego building instructions on the net (plenty available) if you wish to model "real" models.

Grouping and exporting Now I think this is rather *important: Since the model consists of hundreds of individual bricks it can be quite tricky to apply materials to the correct bricks. A important tip* is to group the bricks by color *before* you export the model and then export each group as an individual model. In this way you will have them nicely grouped when imported and applying a material to a group will save you a lot of time and frustration compared to selecting hundreds of bricks. *Another tip*: As you can see in the screenshots I've also included a ground plane brick and a piece that sticks up. These 2 are deleted once imported but defines the models outer X,Y and Z limits. In this way the 3 models are perfectly aligned and sized/scaled when imported.
I don't export the entire model in one piece..		...instead I group & export the black pieces...
...the grey pieces...		...and the red pieces as 3 individual models.
